Is cross-browser incompatibility really a problem?

What is the difference between jpg, gif and png?
JPEG is superior to GIF for storing full colour or grey scale images of realistic scenes such as scanned photographs and similar material. Continuous variation in colour will be represented better using JPEG. Sharp edges are not represented well in JPEG format.
GIF gives a better representation on images with only few distinct colours such as line drawings and simple cartoons. It gives a lossless and better compressed output. PNG was evolved from GIF and is superior as it has better compression and supports millions of colours.
